Mediscan have now handled almost 55,000 hair tests

About Mediscan

Mediscan was formed as a cooperative of five Perth-based HTMA practising doctors and three Perth practising pharmacists in 2006.

Their aim was to service the HTMA (Hair Test Mineral Analysis) needs of healthcare professionals in Western Australia.

In those days, the turnaround time for a sample took nearly three weeks as analysis had to be outsourced overseas. However, by establishing a partnership with Source Certain, a local West Australian state-of-the-art laboratory, the group successfully reduced the turnaround time to 7-10 days.

To date, Mediscan and Source Certain have processed almost 55,000 hair tests.

Laboratory Operations

Mediscan Australia utilises Source Certain, a world-leading forensic and analytical service facility based in Perth, Western Australia.

The state-of-the-art laboratory and stringent QA/QC protocols, ensure that the highest quality of analytical science is delivered to our patients.

Source Certain uses advanced analytical instrumentation such as ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) and ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy) to determine the analyte concentrations in the hair tissue, providing accurate and reproducible data.

The use of both instruments and correlations of data enables the most accurate concentration determination to be made. The sample is digested with a custom acid mixture, diluted, and analysed.

Certified Reference Materials and in-house standards are used to calibrate and optimise the instruments to ensure that analytical runs can be compared. There are several types of samples also included for quality control and quality assurance purposes, to ensure the data delivered is accurate, reproducible, and representative of the sample.

The company has established a reputation for technical excellence and has become a leading supplier of analytical services across Australia and globally.
